Vietnam Imposes Heavy Sentences for Anti-China Protesters

In late October, Vietnam bought to the court over ten of participants in anti-China protests in mid-May. Three activists Le Thi Phuong Anh, Pham Minh Vu and Do Nam Trung, who are members of unsanctioned civil societies will also be tried soon. The trio was arrested when they went to Dong Nai in order to cover the news for anti-China demonstrations which later turned into violent.

Le Van Bi, one of protesters, was sentenced to 14 months in prison for shouting patriotic slogans. He just stayed outside but not participated in destroying foreign-invested companies nor beating Chinese workers.

His wife expressed dissatisfaction on his sentence, saying he just peacefully protested the Chinese illegal deployment of HYSY-981 oil rig in Vietnam’s waters. Many mobs, who destroyed foreign properties and called on others to do the same, ran away and remained unpunished, she added.

French Senior Diplomat Assaulted by Mobs in Vietnam Southern Hub

French Consul-General Emmanuel Ly Batallan in Vietnam’s southern hub Ho Chi Minh City on Nov 5 was assaulted by thugs supported by plain-clothes policemen when he tried to assist a local activist, the Reporter Without Border (RWB) said.

Mr. Batallan was beaten when he came to a private house of Pham Minh Hoang, a Franco-Vietnamese blogger in the city after the blogger asked for help. Five days ago, a group of gangsters accompanied by plain-clothes security agents moved into a house close to Mr. Hoang’s home, in which political dissident Nguyen Bac Truyen also lives. The mobs blocked Mr. Truyen from going out.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised the French senior diplomat to protest after being informed about the assault.

Vietnam and France elevated their relations to strategic partnership this year, nearly 60 years after Paris withdrew its soldiers from the Southeast Asian nation to end its colonization in Indochina.

Both Mr. Hoang and Mr. Truyen were former political prisoners for their articles criticizing Vietnam’s government.

In 2011, Mr. Hoang, a mathematics professor, was sentenced to three years in prison and three years under house arrest for “attempting to overthrow the government”. He is still in the probation period.

Meanwhile, lawyer Truyen was imprisoned for four years in 2007 for anti-state propaganda.

After completing their imprisonments, Mr. Truyen and Mr. Hoang have been harassed continuously by local authorities. Mr. Truyen has been beaten seriously by mobs and policemen several times.

On the same time, security agents also stationed near private houses of other activists, including Mr. Nguyen Tri Dung and Ms. Duong Thi Tan, a son and the former wife of prominent dissident Nguyen Van Hai (aka Dieu Cay), and Dr. Nguyen Dan Que.
