ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson MEP
17/07/2013 | Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Party.
ALDE Party President Sir Graham Watson MEP has written to EU foreign affairs High Representative Baroness Catherine Ashton together with other MEPs from across political parties to raise concerns about human rights abuses and internet censorship in Vietnam.
Sir Graham commented: “The EU should be putting pressure on Vietnam to release its political prisoners, put an end to arbitrary arrests and make sure the EU delegation supports pro-democracy and reformist civil society in the country.”
“The EU and Vietnam are currently negotiating a big trade deal. Respect for basic human rights standards has to be made a pre-requisite to any upgrade to our trade relations.”
The letter was ahead of next week’s Foreign Affairs Council where EU ministers will discuss the EU’s global human rights action plan, which specifically calls for human rights to be taken into consideration in the EU’s trade relations.
