Vietnam and the United States have witnessed strong development in the two countries’ comprehensive partnership, Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Nguyen Sinh Hung said Thursday.

The remarks were made at a meeting between Hung and visiting President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate Patrick Leahy in Hanoi.

Hung said at the meeting that Vietnam strives to implement bilateral agreements in accordance with Vietnam-U.S. comprehensive partnership, adding that he hoped the two countries speed up efforts to heal the wounds of war in Vietnam.

Hung noted that Vietnamese and U.S. legislature bodies should boost exchange so that the United States can soon recognize Vietnam as a market economy.

The United States was also urged to create favorable conditions in Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations for the two sides’ bilateral economic and trade relations, Hung was quoted by the state-run news agency VNA as saying.

Vietnam expects the U.S. Senate to spend appropriate budget in solving humanitarian issues in Vietnam, said Hung.

Vietnam’s national assembly chairman at the meeting sent an invitation to the U.S. senator and his delegation to attend the 132nd Inter-Parliamentary Union General Assembly which will be held in Hanoi in 2015.

Leahy, for his part, said that he always supports promoting U.S. efforts in post-war remediation in Vietnam and strengthening people-to-people relations between the two countries.

The visiting U.S. senator affirmed that accomplishments in U.S.- Vietnam cooperation are of great importance for tightening bilateral relations and for contributing to boosting future cooperation.
