On 17 April 2014, the EP adopted a resolution on the state of play of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (FTA) marking an important step towards strengthening human rights protection.
FIDH and its member organisation, the Vietnam Committee on Human Rights (VCHR) advocated intensively for the inclusion of human rights safeguards in the future FTA and particularly for a human rights impact assessment. The resolution echoes FIDH and VCHR’s demands, calling for the conditioning of the FTA on concrete human rights progress, the introduction of human rights in the future sustainable development chapter, and urges the European Commission to conduct a human rights impact assessment in line with the guiding principles of the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food.
