Vietnam supports dialogue and cooperation between countries to promote the principles of international law and unanimity and restrict confrontation and imposition at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Cuong Vietnam delegation head made the statement at the 28th UNHRC session in Geneva.
Cuong highlighted the agency’s certain contributions to promoting the respect for and protection of human rights and helping raise awareness and more comprehensive and objective approach on human rights.
Regarding the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), he said, the UNHRC has timely responded to crises and serious violations of human rights in the world, adding that the organization needs to ensure transparency, objectivity, impartiality and intensify dialogues, cooperation and pay greater attention to the priorities of developing countries and vulnerable groups.
As a member of the UNHRC, Vietnam has actively and constructively played its role with the highest responsibility and desires to make substantial contribute to the Council’s operations, Cuong said.
The Deputy Minister praised his country’s achievements in the protection and promotion of human rights as well as efforts in realizing international commitments on human rights, including its URP’s accepted recommendations and the voluntary pledges Vietnam made in support of its candidacy to the UNHRC.
Vietnam also adopted the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatments or Punishments (CAT) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
On the fringes of the high level segment, the official also delivered a speech at a high-level discussion on promoting the global standardization of CAT, meeting with foreign affairs officials from Georgia, Japan, Serbia, the Republic of Cyprus, and the US to discuss measures to step up bilateral cooperation and coordination at the UNHRC and other multilateral forums.
The high-level segment of the UNHRC’s 28th session from March 2-5 was attended by senior officials from more than 90 countries and international organisations.
