Cambridge LLP seeks release of Vietnamese political prisoners
Cambridge LLP has partnered with Viet Tan, a Vietnamese reform organization that focuses on rolling back existing restrictions against freedom of expression and freedom of association and assembly.
The partnership has launched an advocacy campaign for Vietnamese activists serving long prison sentences. Cambridge is counsel to Dang Xuan Dieu, a citizen/journalist who is one of the imprisoned and who has received particularly brutal treatment as a consequence of his peaceful advocacy.
The campaign kicked off on May 28 with a hearing at Parliament, meetings with Parliamentarians and meetings with other elected officials and NGOs in Canada.
Dentons launches new technology initiative
Dentons has launched NextLaw Labs, a global collaborative innovation platform focused on developing, deploying, and investing in new technologies and processes to transform the practice of law.

Norton Rose forms CETA partnership
Norton Rose Fulbright has combined with Atlantic Advisory Partners to help companies take advantage of the Comprehensive Trade and Economic Agreement between Canada and the European Union.
Norton Rose and Atlantic will provide strategic, legal, business development and financial services advice to companies in both markets.
OBA Honours David Young
David Young of David Young Law is this year’s recipient of the Ontario Bar Association’s Karen Spector Memorial Award for Excellence in Privacy Law. The honour will be presented at the section’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, June 24, where Young will provide a perspective on the evolution of Canada’s privacy laws over the last 15 years.
Mulroney keynote speaker at CBA Quebec Branch President’s Dinner
Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, now a senior partner at Norton Rose Fulbright Canada, will be the keynote speaker at the Canadian Bar Association’s Quebec Branch President’s Diner on Wednesday, June 3 at 7:00 PM at The Windsor hotel’s ballroom in Montreal. His topic will be “Quebec’s place in Canada, and Canada’s place on the world stage in the 21st century, as we approach 150 years of Confederation.”
Other guests of honour and speakers include Stéphanie Vallée, Quebec Justice Minister, and CBA President Michele Hollins. The Jules Deschênes Award, Rajpattie Persae Pro Bono Award, Law Sections’ Award of Excellence and Student’s Award for Social Involvement will also be presented during the evening.
George Bougadis co-chairs Greek community fundraiser
George Bougadis of Bougadis Chang, who is General Legal Counsel to the Greek Community of Toronto, will co-chair the organization’s annual one-day fundraising golf tournament, to be held on Thursday, June 4 at the Lionhead Golf & Country Club in Brampton.
GCT is the oldest and largest non-profit charitable Hellenic Canadian organization in existence. It delivers educational, cultural, religious, and social service programs to thousands daily.
The tournament is traditionally sold out, although some player registrations andsponsorship opportunities remain available. Silent auction and other prize donations are also being accepted. Charitable tax receipts will be issued.

The federal Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women, Kellie Leitch, is the guest speaker at a Cassels Brock & Blackwell breakfast reception at the firm’s Toronto offices on Tuesday, June 16 at 7:30 AM. Attendance is by invitation only.
