The 12th Australia-Vietnam Human Rights Dialogue will be held in Canberra on 14 August 2015.
Australia and Vietnam work closely on human rights. This Dialogue is an important opportunity for us to discuss practical ways to strengthen our engagement on human rights issues, raise human rights concerns, and implement international human rights standards.
Australia is supporting Vietnam’s efforts to strengthen its legal framework through the Human Rights Technical Cooperation (HRTC) program. This program is making an important contribution to strengthening Vietnam’s gender equality law, ethnic minority rights law, labour law and human trafficking law.
We are also working alongside Non-Government Organisations and national human rights institutions, providing aid for capacity building, and engaging through the UN General Assembly Third Committee and the UN Human Rights Council.
Strengthening our human rights engagement is a key component of our bilateral relationship with Vietnam. In March this year I signed the Declaration on Enhancing the Australia-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership, which lays the foundation for enhanced cooperation on security, economic, immigration, defence and human rights.
Australia will be represented at the Dialogue by members of the Australian Parliament Human Rights Sub-Committee, the President of the Human Rights Commission, and senior officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Attorney-General’s Department.
