PANO – The United Nations (UN)’ Human Rights Council opened its 30th regular session on September 14that the UN Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
Attending the event were UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein; representatives from Foreign Ministries of some countries; ambassadors and heads of the missions of 47 Human Rights Council’s member states; representatives from more than 100 observer countries, UN’s agencies, as well as international and non-governmental organizations related to human rights.
In his speech on the situation of protecting and promoting human rights in the world recently, the High Commissioner thanked the international community for their support in his first year of taking the post and emphasized that further cooperation among countries is needed to help solve currently urgent issues, especially the migration crisis in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe.
Within the framework of the Human Rights Council, the High Commissioner hoped that UN member states would implement strict recommendations in line with the Universal Periodic Review mechanism, step up their cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms, including the Human Rights Council’s special procedures.
As recommended by the human rights chief, member states should show their concerns on UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as other global issues such as climate change, poverty and hunger while making and carrying out policies on human rights.
The opening ceremony of the regular session also heard concerns of some states, international and non-governmental organizations on protecting and promoting human rights, focusing on the protection of civilians, especially migrants and refugees resulting from armed conflicts or terrorist activities.
States, especially developing ones and members of the Non-Aligned Movement expressed their wish that the High Commissioner and other UN mechanisms on human rights would bolster cooperation and information transparency for the member states.
Till October 2nd, the 30th regular session of the Human Rights Council will study 70 reports of related UN agencies; organize 6 working sessions and other dialogues with nearly 20 mechanisms and special procedures on human rights; as well as discuss and make decisions on more than 40 draft resolutions related to different human right issues.
The key concerns raised in this regular session are expected to be situations related to migrants and refugees in the world, sustainable development, rights to have access to fresh water, environmental sanitation and hygiene, the death sentence and drugs.
Head of the Vietnamese mission attending this regular session is Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Trung, head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN. Ambassador Trung is also an ASEAN Co-Coordinator to the Human Rights Council in 2015.
This session marked Vietnam’s two years of being an active and responsible member in its three-year term of 2014-2016 at the UN’s central agency on human rights.
