Police are investigating a case in which two lawyers were assaulted in Chuong My District, Hanoi on Tuesday afternoon, following their visit to the house of an inmate beaten to death in prison.
Prior to the incident, the two victims, Tran Nhu Nam and Le Van Luan, were meeting Do Thi Mai, the mother of deceased prisoner Do Dang Du, at her home, the two lawyers said on their Facebook pages.
They offered a free service to Mai regarding the death of her child, 17-year-old Du.
Du was beaten by his cellmate, 17-year-old Vu Van Binh, on October 4 and died on October 10 in hospital.
After leaving Mai’s house at around 2:00 pm the same day, the two were ambushed by a gang consisting of eight men, one of whom was wearing a mask, forcing them to flee their car to escape.
Nam was admitted to the hospital with a concussion, a broken nose and wounded eyes, the lawyer said on his Facebook page.
Local police then arrived at the scene to carry out an investigation.
The Hanoi Lawyer Delegation Office has dispatched its vice chairman, Tran Dinh Trien, to the Chuong My Police Department to look into the case as well as to propose an urgent protection program for the two victims.
