Vietnam’s authorities have launched a probe into the criminal case in which three senior party officials of the northernmost province of Yen Bai were shot by gun, state media has reported.
On Aug 18, Pham Duy Cuong, secretary of the provincial communist party’s Committee, and Ngo Ngoc Tuan, chairman of the province’s People’s Council cum head of the provincial party’s Organization Committee were shot in their offices.
Do Cuong Minh, head of the province’s Forest Ranger Department, was the third dead official. He was found dead in the office of the first victim. The two offices are about 150 meters from each other in the same party’s building in the province.
At the time of incident, some cadres met Minh when he moved from Tuan’s office to Cuong’s office, state media reported.
State media reported that Cuong and Tuan were shot three times each by a gun K59 which belongs to Minh, who was killed by a shot from his nape.
Minh, a son-in-law of a former party secretary in the province, was promoted to the post in 2014.
According to the initial investigation, Minh was said to kill the first two officials and latter committed suicide by the gun which was granted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for forest rangers.
The incident happened in the early morning of Thursday prior to a meeting of the province’s People’s Council. The meeting was cancelled due to the murders.
The causes of the murders are not unveiled.
Few hours after the incident, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc came to the province to oversee the case. The provincial government’s building and other places were under tightened control of security forces.
The three officials were taken to a local hospital for urgent medical treatment but they died on the day.
Gun attacks against state officials are rare in Vietnam where gun use is limited to army and police forces.
In September last year, a captain of Dong Nai province traffic police opened gunfire at a police station, killing a major and injuring two other policemen.
