On March 28, the People’s Court of Hanoi convicted local activist Truong Van Dung of “conducting anti-state propaganda” under Article 88 of the country’s Penal Code for giving interviews to foreign-based media and possessing books with critical content for the communist regime.
The indictment built by the city’s People’s Procuracy said that in the period between 2015 and before being arrested in 2022, Dung gave interviews to a program “Cánh đồng mây” of the Radio Saigon Dallas in the US in which he criticized the Vietnamese communist regime for injustice in the country and the ongoing suppression against the local dissent.
Dung was said to possess a number of copies of two illegally printed books of two political dissidents and human rights activists Pham Thi Thanh Nghien and Pham Doan Trang with anti-state content.
The indictment also said he possessed a number of banners with anti-government contents.
During the trial which lasted a few hours in the morning of Tuesday, Dung’s lawyers Ngo Anh Tuan and Le Dinh Viet said that these accusations are groundless and their client is innocent. However, the trial panel ignored their defense statement.
In his final words, Dung accused police officers of the Hanoi Police Department of beating him during an interrogation which led to severe health consequences for him who spent two weeks in hospital for treatment after that.
Dung was arrested in late May last year. He was permitted to meet with his lawyers last month to prepare for defense. His family has not been allowed to visit him in a temporary detention center but only provided food and other stuff monthly.
He is the first activist being convicted of “conducting anti-state propaganda” so far this year. Other 11 activists are under investigation of the same charge which is used very often by the communist regime to silence local political dissidents.
Dung is a well-known activist in street demonstrations in many social issues in Vietnam, including injustice, land grabbing, human rights violations and environmental pollution. He also took part in charity programs which aim to help victims of legal miscarriage and families of prisoners of conscience as well as defenders-at-risks.
