The Khmer Kampuchea Krom Association has vowed to seek help from the United Nations if the petition it submitted to the Vietnamese government yesterday leads to no improvement in the rights of its citizens in Vietnam.
The association said it would also raise the issue of Kampuchea Krom rights abuses with other countries in the region.
The statement was made as eight representatives from organisations affiliated to the association submitted a petition to the Vietnamese government through the Cambodian Foreign Affairs Ministry yesterday afternoon.
The petition calls on the Vietnamese government to stop the persecution of Kampuchea Krom people living under the control of Vietnamese authorities.
Son Chum Chuon, programme director at the Khmer Kampuchea Krom for Human Rights and Development Association, said members of the community have called many times for rights abuses to stop.
He said Kampuchea Krom people in Vietnam faced religious, educational and socio-economic restrictions, as well as a lack of access to cultural information.
If the Vietnamese government would not take steps to solve these issues, he said representatives of Kampuchea Krom groups would raise the matter when Asean countries meet in the Philippines in July, and at a UN meeting that month.
He said: “We will bring these issues to the attention of the region and to a United Nations meeting in Geneva.”
The submission of the petition was timed to mark the 68th anniversary of the French secession of Kampuchea Krom to Vietnam.
The community remembers those who sacrificed their lives to defend the freedom of the Kampuchea Krom on June 4 every year.
That is the day in 1949 that French colonisers gave the 21 Kampuchea Krom provinces to Vietnam.
