The People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City has scheduled to hold the first-instance hearing on May 12 to try local activist Tran Van Bang (aka Trang Bang) on the allegation of “conducting anti-state propaganda” under Clause 1 of Article 117 of the country’s Criminal Code.

Mr. Bang, who was arrested on March 1 last year, faces imprisonment of between five and 12 years in prison, if convicted.

The hearing is open for the public, according to the court’s notice given to his lawyer Tran Dinh Dung who just got an approval to provide legal assistance for the activist in the upcoming hearing.

Mr. Bang, 62, was a veteran participating in the northernmost war against China in early 1980s. Since 2011, he has participated in campaigns protesting China’s violations of Vietnam’s sovereignty, peaceful demonstration for environmental projection, and voice against injustice across the nation, including widespread land grabbing by local authorities in many provinces.

He has provided great support for defenders-at-risks and families of prisoners of consciences.

Several years before being arrested, he suffered from a number of diseases which became more severe due to inhumane living conditions in the temporary detention facility managed by the HCM City Police Department.

Bang has been the third activist being tried of “conducting anti-state propaganda” so far this year.

In March and April, Truong Van Dung and Nguyen Lan Thang were convicted and sentenced to six years in prison each.
