Vietnam consults on human rights, democracy issues ahead of IPU-132

The Content Subcommittee of the 132nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union that will take place in Vietnam from  March 28 and April 1 held a seminar in Hanoi on Friday to seek consultation on issues to be discussed by the IPU’s Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights (SCDHR).

Accordingly, recommendations from government bodies, social organizations and experts were collected on several issues to be discussed during the Standing Committee’s meetings, according to theVietnam News Agency.

As both democracy and human rights are universal core values, they must be defined in national constitutions and laws, Vietnam’s Vice National Assembly (NA) Chairman Uong Chu Luu told the seminar.

Luu put emphasis on the important role of the SCDHR in facilitating greater democracy and human rights as well as related laws.

The Vietnamese official added that the ultimate goals of the IPU and SCDHR include increasing legislative power, enhancing effectiveness in supervising government initiatives, and creating greater freedom and democracy towards peace and sustainable development.

The seminar’s delegates considered the draft resolutions entitled “International law as it relates to national sovereignty and non-intervention in the internal affairs of states and human rights” and “Democracy in the digital era and the threat to privacy and individual freedoms” together with issues related to the health of women, children and adolescents and the rights of children.

The participants also voiced their opinions and shared their experiences with a view to deepening the Vietnamese NA, State and people’s point of view concerning issues to be debated at the upcoming IPU-132.
