Michael Nguyen, Detained by Vietnamese Authorities
28 Days Found Alive

Our family would like to take this opportunity to give you an update on Michael Nguyen’s status and to thank the US Dept of State, the US Embassy in Vietnam, our US Congressional Leaders, Organizers, and most of all, our Friends and Supporters who have worked tirelessly on our family’s behalf in the search for Michael Nguyen.

Yesterday we received notification from the US Embassy that Michael has been found alive. The Vietnamese authorities have finally confirmed our suspicion that Michael is being illegally detained at Phan Dang Luu Detention Center. As of now, Michael has been detained for 26 days, without any formal charges.

Since we now know of Michael’s detention, we can construct a timeline of what his family and friends believe is an illegal detainment.

1 On July 7th, on the way back to Saigon from Da Nang, Michael was detained without cause in Dong Nai. During his detainment, the only thing we know is that Michael carried on him was 1200.00 USD and 1,000,000 Vietnamese đồng for travelling expenses and his clothes.
2 From July 7th thru July 16th, Michael was being held at an unknown location. Throughout this one week, the Vietnamese authorities refused to notify the US Embassy that they have detained an American citizen travelling through Vietnam against the reciprocal agreement signed by both countries, to advise of each others detained citizens within 4 days.
3 On July 17, the Vietnamese authorities notified the US Embassy of Michael’s detainment. It took the Vietnamese authorities 10 days to finally notify the US that they had illegally jailed an American citizen.
4 On July 31st, the US Consulate was eventually granted permission for the 1st time to visit Michael at Phan Dang Luu detention center.

As of now, there is not one single charge filed against Michael.

We hope this absence of any formal charges clears any suspicion that Michael was involved in any form of anti-government activities.

We ask the Vietnamese authorities to release Michael immediately, for detaining anyone without any crime being committed, without any probable cause is a violation of human rights, and of international law.
While the official has confirmed that Michael is alive and healthy, the next phase of our struggle is to obtain Michael’s release and safe return to the United States.
Thank you for your continued support.
